Cryotherapy

Also called Icetherapy. Basically, the cryotherapy covers a very wide field. From ice packs to cold treatments (Kneipp castings). But attention! There is are big difference between cooling and ice!

Any kind of application of cold causes in different dimensions a so-called “vasoconstriction”. This means the narrowing of blood vessels. Besides this main effect of ice, also affects the vegetative nerveous system. That means on the part of the body functions which we cannot regulate by directly. The most important effects are:

→ reducing the blood circulation

→ stop bleeding

→ Decongestant (limitation: see Manual lymphatic drainage)

→ reducing the metabolism

→ reducing Pain

→ decreasing muscle tension

→ Anti-inflammatory

This list could be extended considerably. Much depends on the type of temperature and duration of cold and form of Ice application. Also the timing of application is very critical.

Basically it can be said that for long-term application of cold (> 2min) over a longer period (1 day or more), the temperature in the tissue should not fall below 15 ° C. At lower temperatures, the negative effects of the cold outweigh, such as metabolic reduction (= cure inhibition, risk of tissue necrosis).

But there are exceptions like the “ice bath” after very extensive (long-lasting and intense, such as Marathon, professional football etc.) muscle strain.

In chronic conditions, it is in any case it is advisable to seek professional advice.
